Koumbit is looking for a new member on our infrastructure/sysadmin team, to work 15 hours per week, at a rate of $21.60 per hour. The position will be held from March 20th 2017.
Koumbit has been providing web, email, and server hosting in addition to web site consultation services since 2004. We maintain physical and virtual servers, hosting platforms, network infrastructure, and phone systems. Koumbit is based around openness and equality: workers are specialized in open source technology and are organized non-hierarchically.
Passwords are used everywhere in our modern life. Between your email account and your bank card, a lot of critical security infrastructure relies on "something you know", a password. Yet there is little standard documentation on how to generate good passwords. There are some interesting possibilities for doing so; this article will look at what makes a good password and some tools that can be used to generate them.
Imagine you’re at a border crossing, and the guard asks you to hand over all of your electronics for screening. The guard then asks that you unlock your device, provide passwords and decryption keys. Right now, he’s asking nicely, but he happens to be carrying an unpleasant-looking rubber hose, Yes, cryptographers actually do call this “rubber hose cryptanalysis.” and appears to be willing to use it. Now imagine you’re a journalist covering war crimes in the country you’re trying to leave. So, what can you do?

PGP stands for Pretty Good Privacy. At it’s core, it is an internet standard (called OpenPGP) used for data encryption and digital signatures. Software that employs this standard is available in both a free, open source version produced by the Free Software Foundation called the GNU Privacy Guard (or GPG for short) as well as a low-cost commercial version.
People often say that online behavior would improve if every comment system forced people to use their real names. It sounds like it should be true – surely nobody would say mean things if they faced consequences for their actions?
Please note the following policies around billing.
In general, hours worked by Koumbit are billed at the end of each month (or the beginning of the following one). Some exceptions are made; for example, for work that will soon be finished or when only a small amount of time has been worked to date.
All hours worked are billed at the end of each trimestre (Koumbit's trimesters end at the end of November, February, May and August). At that time, less than one hour of work is billed, rounded up to one hour.
It's finally here! Koumbit is pleased to announce the official launch of our Solidarity Hosting Program. The program offers free basic hosting services (either a website or a mailing list) to organisations promoting social justice in Quebec and abroad.
Each year Koumbit offers a few plans to groups in need whose activities are in accordance with Koumbit's values.
We are pleased to have provided support to the following groups in the past few months:
You can now pay your Koumbit bills through your online banking service (eg: AccèsD, CIBC, etc.). For this you must select "Reseau Koumbit" in the list of suppliers in the category "Telecommunications and IT" and add it to your list. Thereafter, you will need your invoice number or customer number based on the requirements of your bank. If you have any questions or problems, we will be happy to help you.
Koumbit's Infrastructure team would like to inform you of a hardware upgrade that we have done on the main HAG server that handles all of your email.
Checking your email through Koumbit will now be faster! We also hope that this upgrade will help us provide a more stable service.

It is a regular policy at Koumbit that we do not work on May 1st, international workers' day. This year we declare our participation in the social strike on that day as part of the larger movement against austerity.
It sometimes falls to Koumbit's legal committee to review new laws that could affect our activities. Although we have no legal training, we do our best to decode these documents so that we can understand their potential impact on our work. Among other reasons, it's more cost-effective for us to pay our employees to do this work, rather than hiring a legal professional. With that in mind, what follows cannot be considered as official legal advice.
A major upgrade of the AlternC control panel and associated servers took place on Sunday, June 15th. The upgrade went well, and most services resumed operations soon after. There were however some bugs for which we apologize. You will also apreciate some new features.

On April 7, 2014 information was released about a new vulnerability in OpenSSL, the cryptography library that powers the vast majority of private communication across the Internet. This library is key for maintaining privacy between servers and clients, and confirming that Internet servers are who they say they are.
Koumbit is again part of the Tor privacy network. We provide this service to the public in response to the increasingly pervasive surveillance of everyone who uses the internet. We believe that there have been inexcusable attacks on democracy and basic rights to privacy.
L'équipe de Koumbit est heureuse de vous souhaiter un 2014 heureux et en santé.
Voici quelques faits saillants des 12 derniers mois pour ceux et celles qui apprécient un format plus bref que notre rapport annuel.
Yes, you've come to the right place - this really is Koumbit's website! After many years of loyal service, we've retired our old site. You may have noticed the gradual evolution of Koumbit's branding materials towards a more humanistic, playful aesthetic.
We've all figured out by now that the future of the web is for the sites we build to be accessible on as wide a variety of platforms as possible. The magic of responsive design means that one single web page can be viewed on a large range of devices
