The Gazette grants $2000 to Koumbit to develop FLOSS applications

Montreal's The Gazette newspaper donated $2000 to Koumbit, in order to foster the development and promotion of free and open source software.

Spring 2009 update: More politically relevant websites & applications in the works

Koumbit is proud to add the Transnational Institute to its clients list. TNI is an Amsterdam-based think tank, famous in academic and activist circles worldwide. A major website overhaul is in the works, which involves the conversion and importation of about 8,000 archived pages.

A couple of weeks ago, Koumbit has also undertaken a major upgrade (from Drupal 4.6 to Drupal 6) of the 32,000 page strong CMAQ website. The CMAQ (Centre for Media Alternatives - Quebec), established in 2001, is part of the Indymedia network. In a similar, albeit more modest manner, Koumbit provides technical support to the Quebec social forum (FSQ), a major social and political event to be held in Montreal on October 8-12, 2009.

Decisions is back!

The Decisions module development has resumed, after a 3-year hiatus, during which a fork called Advpoll had taken the lead. Decisions is a Drupal-based tool that allows organizations to hold secure electronic polls and elections.

Drupal 6 and OpenID up and running

Last March–more than a year after its release (and many contributed module upgrades)–Drupal 6 was deemed "sufficiently stable" for us to undertake the complex process of migrating Koumbit's websites to the new platform. Drupal 6 improved caching system now provides better performances and a more pleasant user experience. Amongst other recent improvements, we've also migrated our member management system to CiviCRM 2.2.0., and now support authentication across our multiple online tools/websites through OpenID.

Shared hosting: Koumbit hits the 300 accounts mark

As of January 2009, Koumbit has hit the 300 accounts mark on the self-managed, shared hosting platform, which now hosts 2220 websites, 1020 mailboxes (with 64 Gb of data) 1200 databases and 430 mailing lists. The above graph shows the rapid growth of account creation, from the birth of our organization until November 2008.

Koumbit takes a stand against data retention

Since the United States (with its infamous Patriot Act) and Europe are on a fast track towards a surveillance state, Canada is unlikely to remain immune to such a fate. As a politically conscious hosting services provider, Koumbit thus adopted the RiseUp Collective Manifesto, written for the Global Day of Action against Data Retention (Oct. 11, 2008):

Fall 2008 Update : Montreal DrupalCamp on Oct. 3-4, Koumbit's AGA on Oct. 10th, and getting our hands dirty on the Ægir project

Here is a little updater, for all you English speakers out there:

We're having a very busy fall at Koumbit, since we are hosting a two-day DrupalCamp in Montreal, starting next Friday, October 3. Registration is optional, but you can signup on the Drupal Groups page for us to have a better idea of how many people will show up.

In addition, we are in the process of beefing up our involvement in the Hostmaster (Ægir) project, in order to provide a better hosting management platform to our clients in the upcoming year.
