Koumbit supports FACIL against ACTA

Koumbit wishes to express its support of FACIL, pour l'appropriation collective de l'informatique libre, which is currently facing a situation that could jeopardize its existence. Following a rejected judicial demand, FACIL is now subject to a penalty of $106,000.00, which could cause its bankruptcy. We find this situation unacceptable since it could lead to the end of FACIL's advocacy around legal and public policy that will define the digital future of Quebec.

FACIL is a group that promotes knowledge sharing, access to information, and preserving fundamental freedoms on privacy and data protection. By its action of promoting free software, it also encourages sustainable economic development in a fair and competitive market, principles which Koumbit also shares

During our last 5 at 7, we received an overview of FACIL's current actions. We wish to highlight their efforts to mobilize against ACTA, a transnational agreement negotiated behind closed doors. ACTA targets the freedom of information dissemination and seeks more wide-spread and instrusive monitoring mechanisms. This lack of democracy in the face of critical questions of freedom of information, is one reason why it is important to support FACIL.
